Product description: Vlasta Koubská - Jana Zbořilová
The monograph about stage and costume designer Jana Zbořilová (*1953) published by the Arts and Theatre Institute in 2016 provides details about her theatre and film production in the course of more than forty years. Zbořilová is one of few women, who work with both costumes and the stage on a highly professional level. Apart from her work for theatre, she has created many distinctive costumes in movies (Ballad for a Bandit, Blues for E. F. Burian, How the World Is Losing Poets). Theatre researcher Vlasta Koubská divides her essay thematically in individual chapters – stopovers. She analyses Zbořilová’s teaching activity at the DAMU Scenography Department in Prague in detail and is able to vividly describe her teaching style. Special attention is paid to cooperation with Goose on the String Theatre in Brno and director Eva Tálská in particular, but she also defines Zbořilová’s participation in important productions of Zdeněk Pospíšil or Boleslav Polívka. She does not fail to mention designer’s work on director Zdeněk Kaloč’s productions in the National Theatre in Brno and other theatres. At the end, she puts Zbořilová’s work in the context of modern Czech stage and costume design, she also appreciates her contribution to the trend of action scenography. The Czech-English book also contains a list of her extensive work, selected bibliography and pictorial supplement: stage and costume designs, photos from productions and archive.
