Product description: Helena Albertová - Karel Zmrzlý
Another volume in the Czech Scenography Personalities series is a monograph about the life and work of stage designer Karel Zmrzlý (1936–2000). The designer graduated from the DAMU Scenography Department with Professor František Tröster. After a one-year job in the NorthMoravian Theatre in Šumperk, he settled in the Victorious February Theatre in Hradec Králové, where he met director Milan Pásek and co-created an important period in the theatre in Hradec. The cooperation continued in Brno (Brothers Mrštík Theatre and the State Theatre) where they created a few unique productions of 20th century operas. Zmrzlý’s work numbers more than 300 productions. Having used his empathy and erudition, he managed to be harmonized with director’s interpretation, to respect the author, to create big dramatic spaces as well as naïve-like designs. His precise designs or paintings as part of a scenic image are the proof of his art of painting. Apart from director Milan Pásek, he also worked with Miloslav Vildman, Pravoš Nebeský, Pavel Rímský, Jaromír Staněk and Alena Vaňáková. Theatre researcher Helena Albertová wrote an essay from her professional point of view. The Czech-English publication features an extensive list of work and pictorial supplement: stage designs and photos from publications and her archive.
